Buddhism is based on the experience of awakening and the path that leads to it. To be awakened means to see reality as it really is, to awaken from the dream of reality to reality itself. The experience of awakening cannot be described in words, but if we tried, we could say that it involves understanding one's own nature and the nature of reality, and deep compassion for all beings. It is a state of freedom from suffering and a profound fulfillment of happiness. It is the pinnacle of human spiritual evolution. By awakening, the Buddha resolved the question of life and death. However, he did not do this just for himself - his achievement therefore has universal significance. On Buddha's Day, we do not celebrate an event from more than 2,500 years ago, but rather rejoice in the possibility of awakening for all who have the potential to achieve it. In other words, for all of us.
