Seven-day meditation retreats are particularly significant — they are a form of initiation into Chan practice. Why this timeframe? It is the length of a lunar phase – seven-day meditation aligns us with the larger rhythms of natural environment. Over its course we can bring the mind into a state of continuous one-pointedness. Depth of focus opens the door to seeing our nature, the fundamental transformative experience navigated by the practice of Chan.
Seven-day retreats apply advanced Chan meditation methods such as Silent Illumination or mochao and huatou. They are called intensive because their setup corresponds to monastic retreats. Life during a retreat is marked by utter simplicity and just a few activities – sitting, exercising, listening, working, and resting. We leave our hectic lives behind and immerse ourselves into the flowing daily rhythm. The external simplification of life benefits the internal simplification, revealing a significantly deeper quality of life.
The internal structure of the retreat is the result of a long and tried-out tradition. A set of favourable conditions — place, group, teacher, rhythm, silence and methods – all assist us in our meditation.
Retreats on Hartovski Vrh are particularly inspiring — the location is supporting us in every way possible. Day starts at 5 a.m. and ends at 10 p.m. Silence is observed throughout.
Resident retreat master is Žarko Andričević, who has led more than 80 seven-day and longer Chan retreats. There are normally two talks a day, plus regular personal interview time with the teacher. All talks and instructions are translated to English.
There are two ways to participate in the retreat – in-person and online. Please note that online participants in different time zones are given access to recorded talks that due to the time difference they cannot attend in real time.
